Fewer compromises. No louder claims.
We focus on what we can control: the inputs we choose, the waste we avoid, and the longevity of the products we make. This page tells you exactly what that looks like in practice.
How we think about sourcing.
Sustainability is tradeoff-heavy. We share our current choices plainly and update this page when things change — no greenwashing, no vague pledges.
Tallow as upcycling
Tallow is a valuable by-product of the beef industry. Using it supports fuller use of the animal rather than creating new demand for petroleum-derived or virgin synthetic bases.
Produce to need
We run smaller batches to prioritize freshness, reduce overstock, and minimize the disposal of unsold inventory — a common but underreported waste problem in skincare.
Comfort drives consistency
Comfort-first textures help people use products daily and fully — which reduces half-used jars, routine churn, and product waste at the consumer end.
Responsible inputs, clearly explained.
The base ingredient.
Our tallow comes from grass-fed cattle on local farms in British Columbia and Alberta — a traditional, lipid-compatible base with a fatty-acid profile remarkably close to human sebum. Sourcing it close to home supports fuller use of what's already being produced, reducing waste rather than creating new demand.
- Sourced from local grass-fed farms in BC & Alberta
- By-product upcycling rather than petroleum-derived alternatives
- Purified in-house for improved scent and finish
- Selected for compatibility with the skin barrier, not just texture
Functional and efficient.
We use clinically-aligned actives at daily-use concentrations — enough to matter, not overdosed. Efficient percentages mean less ingredient waste and lower irritation risk.
- Niacinamide, panthenol, MAP, zinc PCA — each present for a reason
- Stable formulations protect ingredient integrity through shelf life
- No proprietary blends hiding filler at trace amounts
The majority of our supplies come from Canadian businesses. Where something can't yet be sourced in Canada — certain actives or packaging components with global supply chains — we choose the best available option and improve step by step, without making claims we can't back up.
Sourced close to home.
Our grass-fed tallow comes from local farms in British Columbia and Alberta, and most of our other supplies come from Canadian businesses. When you support Milky Tallow, you're supporting Canadian farmers, makers, and suppliers — and a product made right here in BC.
Less waste, better function.
Packaging is where sustainability gets real. We prioritize protection first — so product isn't wasted — then reduction, then recyclability.
Stable packaging first
Packaging that prevents oxidation, contamination, and premature spoilage avoids the biggest waste: a product that goes bad before it's used. We choose materials that maintain texture and performance.
No unnecessary extras
We avoid secondary packaging when it doesn't improve safety or experience. Labels are kept clean, readable, and durable — not decorative padding.
Recyclability depends on your area
Recyclability depends on your local system. Rinse and recycle where accepted. Separate components (lid/jar) when possible. Check your municipality's rules — we're happy to help if you're unsure.
Small actions that actually matter.
Use it fully
The most sustainable product is the one you finish. Consistent daily use reduces routine churn and half-used containers — which is where most skincare waste actually happens.
Tip: Apply thin layers and reapply as needed rather than using large amounts all at once.Keep it clean
Clean fingers or a spatula for jars. Lids closed tightly. Stored cool and dry. Preventing contamination protects performance and reduces wasted product mid-bottle.
Recycle smarter
A quick rinse and separation of lid from jar improves the odds that packaging is actually processed rather than rejected at a sorting facility.
We'll help you choose the lowest-waste option.
